Popular culture is an object, place, music, and films that are obtainable. In our own culture, our lives’ are something everyone wants. Popular culture means, I can follow a certain religion if I so choose. It also, means I can want something someone else has or does. It’s a song that I listen to. It’s a very popular film, like vampire movies or TV shows. Such as, True Blood on HBO and the Twilight saga movies. It’s the documentary films such as Sicko, Katrina, Greensburg Kansas, and Fast Food Nation. Popular culture is everywhere and its here to stay.
The understanding of popular culture is very important in the business world. In marketing, you need to know the next big thing that is marketable to a certain age group. It’s important to sales, because without sales. You can not sell your product without getting the word out. What are hot right now are the Vampire movies, shows, and products. To an average teenager that is gold. There are books on vampires, movies, and ect. I myself have read the Twilight Saga books. They are very popular with the younger set crowd. Reality TV is so popular right now. That is all that is on TV anymore. So, it is very relevant to my present and future career. It’s important that I get it right and know what popular culture is.
The artifact that I have chosen that is an example of popular culture is Michael Moore’s film Sicko. It represents popular culture in a way. Health care reform has taken center stage. There have been sometimes violent town hall meetings. There are the Tea Parties and demonstrations that people have joined. People are very scared and need heard. They need a voice in the health care reform process. It’s that the patriot way! Americans for hundred of years have demonstrated a need to be heard. I choose this for my popular culture artifact because. I feel it represents a present culture that has played out and everyone needs the right facts. I feel Michaels Moore’s vision or take on it. The film has important facts on the universal health care in other countries. It shows how in France, you can have a doctor come a make a house call in the middle of the night. In Cuba, where three 9/11 rescue workers got the care they needed. How an American woman went across the border into Canada and got the care she needed. How in England, ever prescriptions is only $10.00 and the only thing in an England hospital that the cashiers only function is to give people money if they need reimbursement for their transportation.

I completely agree with you that for a marketer it is extremely important to have a good under standing of pop culture. If they can’t accurately reach their target market they will sell nothing. A good example is now a days businesses are turning to social networking sites such as Facebook to reach their target market since they know their target audience uses these sites and it is an effective way to reach them. I also like your artifact
